The formulas of mean, median, and mode is an effective way to interpret data. To define mean, it is known as the average and is calculated by adding all the numbers in the data and then dividing by the number of values in the set. An example of mean (average) is adding all the test scores and then dividing the amount of students who took the test to find out the class test average. For median, this is the middle value when a data set is ordered from least to greatest. An example of median is listing the test scores from least to greatest and finding the middle value of the class test scores. Lastly, the mode is the number that appears the most in the data set. An example of this is looking for the test score that occurs the most. These are all effective ways to figure out data.

Mean, median, and mode contribute to the interpretation of data because they allow for predictions to be made about the data. The mean is when you add up all the data points and divide by the number of data points, this, in turn, gives you one number to look at instead of trying to make a prediction based on multiple numbers. For example, with test scores, you could look at all of the test scores or you could add them all together and divide to get the average score which could then be used to see how the class performed overall and what the curve should be. The median is taken by arranging the numbers in order from least to greatest and finding the middle number. This could be used to find the middle scores on tests which allows the teacher to see a midpoint between the high and low scores. The mode is found by determining the common number that appears the most. When the mode is used with test scores a lot of data points are overlooked and only tells you what most people scored, or what the common score was for the class. For example, if 5 people in the class receive a 52% on the test and the other students range between 70%-100% the mode would be 52%, which does not accurately represent the class scores because it overlooks all of the higher scores
