Among the birds and trees and animals, he found peace and joy. One day as he was walking through the forest, he decided to visit the high cliffs that overlooked the river. People had warned him away from this place. “The Little People live there,” they said, and the villagers feared the Little People. But the boy remembered his mother’s words. He knew he carried goodness in his heart, and so he had nothing to fear. As he walked, he heard a sound in a nearby tree. When he looked up, he saw a squirrel scurrying through the branches. Before he could aim his bow to shoot, a tiny arrow sailed through the air past him. It missed the squirrel and dropped to the ground, and the boy heard a tiny voice call, “Try again, Brother. You keep missing him, and I’m starving.” The boy looked down and was amazed to see, at his feet, two tiny hunters. His heart went out to them, for he saw that they could not possibly catch this squirrel. And so he took aim and loosed an arrow, and the squirrel fell to the ground. He picked up the squirrel, bent low and handed it to the hunters. “This is for you,” he said. “You said you were starving.” The two hunters, grateful for the young boy’s generosity, held out their hands to him. “Please come to visit our longhouse so that we might thank you properly,” they said.
