Arousal, Behavior, Stress, and Affect Worksheet Arousal, Behavior, Stress, and Affect Worksheet What are the differences between physiological and psychological needs? Provide examples of each in your response.
Needs are requirements within the human life. According to Deckers, (2010) physiological needs are important needs that are required for an individual’s physical wellness. Therefore, physiological needs are considered as material needs within the body and brain that moves an individual into action. Thus, these needs exhibit a material existence within an individual. Examples of physiological needs for an individual include food, water, shelter, sleep, sex among other. On the other hand, psychological needs are regarded as mental because that they lack the material existence. Thus, these needs are mainly founded on various mental impressions. Psychological needs of an individual emerge from the need to satisfy the physiological needs. The psychological needs are therefore based upon the mental activities of an individual. Examples of psychological needs include self-esteem, and competence. Additionally, the satisfaction of psychological provides an individual with exceptional feeling of satisfaction (Deckers, 2010).
What is the relationship between arousal and behavior? Does this relationship impact performance and affect?
The main association between arousal and behavior involves the fact that arousal motivates an individual to act in a particular manner. Therefore behavior manifests as actions that result from the response of the body or individual to internal or external form of stimuli. The psychological and physiological arousal produces a byproduct of energy that pushes an individual into the satisfaction of the needs. Psychological arousal may be explained in terms of an individual’s fear, tension or anxiety. When an individual experiences such feelings there is a general change in an individual such as sweating, breathing or an increased heart rate. Thus, arousal can be considered as an important enhancement to an individual’s performance. Low arousal can translate to a high level of performance while a high arousal level decreases the performance level of an individual. Tasks involve the various activities that encourage arousal. The association between arousal and behavior is essential as it increases focus and responsiveness. Hence, arousal is important in stimulating an individual’s actions or behavior (Deckers, 2010).
Assess the long-term and short-term effects of stress on the body, brain, and behavior.
Stress is the process through which a person’s body system makes responses and adjustments to change. Various forms of transformations in life can result to emotional, psychological or physical changes in the body. Thus, stress has both an internal and external effect on an individual’s body. Human bodies are designed in such a way that they respond to stress in different ways. Stress can either have a negative or positive impact to an individual. Thus, a negative form of stress can result in an individual being overworked and create tension. Negative stress as a result of the accompanied tension can result into internal problems within the human body. The internal problems include high blood pressure, lack of sleep, stomach problems, and severe headaches.
The long-term impacts of stress on the body of an individual involve the individual engaging in a harmful form of activities. A person may engage in the excessive consumption of alcohol or drug abuse. Additionally, short-term stress can result into long-term effects on an individual’s brain. For instance, the birth of a baby may be accompanied by stress that may lead to a long-term depression condition. It is also crucial to note that stress can result into problems in situations whereby arousal is either high or low leading into maladaptive behavior or disease. An individual should therefore device a proper mechanism on handling stressful events as it is important to an individual wellbeing. Stress can lead to impotence or premature ejaculation in men and vaginal infections and menstrual disorders in women. Furthermore, stress can cause fatalities as a result of stroke, heart attacks, and hypertension. Both the short-term and the long-term effects of stress can hinder the normal functioning of the body and brain (Deckers, 2010).
