Original Question :

Examine the mosaic portraits of Justinian and Theodora at San Vitale (8-8 & 8-9).  Consider the way the emperor and empress are represented here.

Paragraph 1:

In the mosaic of Justinian, Emperor Justinian is depicted with a crown and a halo around his head. This is supposed to represent his rule in both the church and in the state of his empire. Both of the mosaics containing Justinian and Theodora, revolve around the themes of offerings, Justinian is holding bread while Theodora holds a cup of wine.

Paragraph 2:

Jusinian’s and Theodora’s portrayals are both very impressive; both stand garbed in imperial purple and bathed in wealth. Justinian wears a lavish crown and Theodora a pearl-adorned crown, as well as halos. They both hold expensive items, a golden platen and a chalice of wine, that they will donate to the church. Beside Theodora are her attendants, that also sport the wealth of the Byzantine court, and beside Justinian are Government officials and barbarian mercenary soldiers. 

Paragraph 3:

In both of the portraits the emperor and empress are dressed in imperial colors and haloed. They are donating objects like the large golden paten from the emperor and a liturgical vessel from the empress that are going to the church. These objects that they are holding are offerings to the Christian community, they are giving these things much like we read in the bible about the gifts that were given to Jesus when he was born. Eucharist itself revolves around offerings and so in this portrait it almost reiterates the entire concept of what Eucharist really was and what it stood for. By the Emperor and Empress participating in this offering and capture in a portrait you get the feeling that they are leading by example for the way they want the people to follow. The unique thing about this portrait is how the portrait was designed, you see that ” their images are both there and not there at the same time”( pg 242). It strikes me as a reminder to faith and religion, nobody has ever seen God but those that are religious know that he is there; much like these portraits. I think the imagery in this portrait is more about understanding the concept of Christianity, that you must have faith in all things even if you don’t see them. That you must lead a life worthy of God even though you are not sure he exists, that you must follow all of the rules and give praise, or offerings, to God despite his presence being like this portrait; there but not there at the same time.  

Paragraph 4:

Emperor Justinian and Empress Theodora are depicted as blessed by God with riches and health, leading the people by example, offering their precious items to the church for God’s work.  They are both shown haloed, in the center of their images, dressed in fine, royal clothing. The people with them all shown as wealthy and well taken care of.  Theodora shown in health, emphasized by the use of the pearls decorating her headpiece; she brings her offering of a chalice filled with wine of the Eucharist.  Justinian is shown as the wise and pious leader and protector of the people, surrounded by soldiers, government officials, and clergy.  He brings his offering of a golden paten for the bread of the Eucharist.  Both mosaics reflect images seen in the mosaic of Jesus in the church of San Vitale.  Like Jesus, Justinian and Theodora are both dressed in royal purple, have halos around their heads, and are surrounded by their royal court; bringing offerings for the good of others.  Using imagery from Christian images of Jesus, Justinian and Theodora are represented as devout Christians, leading the people with wisdom and piety, in service of God and the church; presumably receiving their wealth and good health from their faithful service.

Paragraph 5:

There is no evidence that they actually set foot in Ravenna, but these two large mosaic panels that face each other across its sanctuary picture their presence here in perpetuity.Justinian, on the north wall, carries a large golden paten that will be used to hold the Eucharistic bread and stands next to Maximianus, who holds a golden, jewel-encrusted cross. The priestly celebrants at the right carry the Gospels, encased in a golden, jeweled book cover, symbolizing the coming of Christ as the Word, and a censer containing burning incense to purify the altar prior to the Eucharist.On the south wall, Theodora, standing beneath a fluted shell canopy and singled out by a golden halo and elaborate crown, carries a huge golden chalice studded with jewels. The rulers present these gifts as precious offerings to Christemulating most immediately Bishop Ecclesius, who offers a model of the church to Christ in the halfdome of the apse, but also the three Magi who brought valuable gifts to the infant Jesus, depicted in “embroidery” at the bottom of Theodora’s purple cloak. In fact, the paten and chalice offered by the royal couple will be used by this church to offer Eucharistic bread and wine to the local Chris- tian community during the liturgy. In this way the entire program of mosaic decoration revolves around themes of offering, extended into the theme of the Eucharist itself.
