1 Final Statistics Project – QMBS 2305 Read the project description and requirement below very carefully. Read it more than once. Let me know if you have questions. Project Background Narrative In this project, you are a consultant working fo r Quality Associates, Inc. a consulting firm that advises its clients about sampling and statistical procedures that can be used to cont rol their manufacturing processes. Currently, you are consulting with BigTruck , Inc., a manufactur ing company that (among other things) manufactures specific bolts that are intended to fit within the fan assembly on big rig trucks. The length of these bolts is critical. BigTruck, Inc. indicate s that the fan assembly requires a bolt that is no longer than 12 cm long . If they are “significantly ” longer than 12 cm , they will not fit and the whole daily batch will need to be reworked – costing extra time and money. Demand for BigTruck ’s bolts has increased so much , tha t t hey decided to purchase an d install a new machine to help meet increased demand . Company policy specifies that in order to bring the machine into BigTruck ’s mainstream manufacturing processes, two consecutive samples of bolts MUST meet specificati ons ( with no more than a p < .05 level of significance ) . That is, they must produce bolts that do not exceed 12 cm. BigTruck has provided the results of the latest 4 sample s of bolts produced by the new machine. The results also include a baseline sample produced by an existing machine approximately a month before the new machine was purchased. The data can be found in the provided E xcel spreadsheet. As a consultant with Quality Associates, it is your responsibility to assist BigTruck by “running ” the numbers and examining the sample data to determi ne whether the machine has been appropriately calibrated to produce bolts that meet specifications (i.e., 12 cm long). As the lead consultant assigned to BigTruck, it is your job to prepare a M anagement R eport which ultimately makes a recommendation about what a ction should be taken and whether the new machine is ready to be incorporated into live production on the shop floor. Assignment The final project (Management Report) will be presented in Word or pdf format with figures, charts, and tables as appropriate to the hypothesis and the data. It should be submitted electronically via Blackboard assignment link. While there is no formal length requirement, the 2 project requirements must be completed and submitted by the due date (Sat 12/12 @ 11:59pm) . Projects will NOT be accepted late due to the en d of the semester requirements . Step 1: Present a brief introduction to your Management Report. That is, describe the purpose, assumptions, and objective s of your Report as well as a brief description or outline of the data collection and analysis . The purpose of this section is to tell your client the scope of your report. Step 2: State the complete h ypothesis (as presented in Section 9.1 of your textbook) . That is, you should present both a null (H 0 ) and an alternate hypothesis (H a ) . Be sure to provide the hypothesis in the correct notation (H 0 & H a ) as well as in a narrative format . Step 3: Describe the data analysis (i.e., hyp othesis test) process. This DOES NOT include a step by step process of Excel steps. Instead, it DOES include a narrative of the comparison process required to test the hypothesis described in Step 2, above. Step 4: Test your hypothesis. Using inferential statistics, test your hypothesis u sing a t - test ( Two S ample Assuming Equal Variances ). You must show the statistical analysis results (mean, t - critical, t - stat, significance level, etc.) relative to a normal distribution (see example posted in the project folder) . Step 5: State your conclusion (i.e., results of your hypothesis test) and whether you accept or reject the Null hypothesis and how you reached thi s conclusion . It might be helpful to utilize the normal distribution provided in Step 4 to explain your conclusion. Step 6: Provide a recommendation to BigTruck, Inc., with respect to the readiness of its new machine to be added into the production line at th is point or whether addi tional machine calibrations and samples are needed. This section should also explain /justify why the specific recommendation is being made.
