Week 2: Foundational Concepts in Organizational Change

Introduction

Consider that you are working for an organization. Has any corporate change affected you or a coworker? Did communication play a role in the change process? How was the change communicated to you? Do you think it was well managed, or could it have been managed differently? The extent to which change affects people depends on how the change process is managed and communicated.

This week, you will focus on the congruence model of organizational behavior, which was developed and refined over time. You will learn about the types and cycles of organizational change and how employees react to these changes. You will also examine the impact communication has on managing change, as well as the role of dynamic change in the workplace.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this week, you will be able to:

  • Evaluate the reasons for failure in organizational change
  • Synthesize the components required for effective organizational change
  • Identify the forces driving organizational change

Please proceed to the Learning Resources.

Learning Resources

Please read and review this week’s Learning Resources before you complete the Discussion.

Reading

  • Course Text: Champions of Change: How CEOs and Their Companies Are Mastering the Skills of Radical Change
    • Chapter 1, “What It Takes: Confronting the Realities of Change”

Chapter 1 provides an overview of the changes that are inevitable but difficult to implement in modern organizations. In addition, the chapter describes the pivotal role of senior leadership as it pertains to organizational changes.

Focus on the three areas that organizations can focus on for a truly sustainable competitive advantage: Intellectual capital, organizational capabilities, and organizational architecture.

    • Chapter 2, “Where to Start: Understanding Organizations”

Chapter 2 focuses on the approach Delta Consulting Group Inc. has been successfully using to understand how an organization works, how it needs to change, and how change in one part of an organization affects the rest of the organization.

Focus on “Dynacorp,” a case study based on a real set of circumstances. This case study will help you understand how collecting data is important for any individual in an organization.

    • Chapter 3, “From Tuning to Overhaul: The Dimensions of Change”

Chapter 3 describes four basic types of organizational change: Incremental, continuous, radical, and discontinuous. In addition, the chapter emphasizes on discontinuous change (or overhaul), which is the most difficult of all changes.

Focus on the S-curve, which was developed by Tushman after years of research. The S-curve helps you understand how the pace of growth of an organization unfolds over time.

    • Chapter 4, “Reshaping the Entire Enterprise: The Special Challenges of Discontinuous Change”

Chapter 4 focuses on the elements and stages of discontinuous change. The chapter also explains the three challenges of discontinuous change. The three challenges can be roughly broken down into five stages and the chapter explains each of these five stages.

Focus on the troubling characteristics that start to emerge in informal organizations and their disastrous outcomes. This information will help you avoid unwanted outcomes of organizational changes.

With these Learning Resources in mind, please proceed to the Discussion.

1. Discussion – Week 2

COLLAPSE

Organizations undergo planned or unplanned changes to evolve to a newer and better level in their life cycle. These changes may include restructuring, the addition of a new product or service, or collaboration. Assume that the chief executive officer (CEO) of an organization has suddenly resigned. Do you think this unplanned change will lead to other changes in the organization?

This week’s Discussion focuses on the types of organizational changes and has two components.

In your initial posting, please address the following:

  • How does what you have read about the S-curve affect your thinking about your own organization?
  • What kinds of change efforts are going on in your organization right now? Address the issues of intensity, complexity, and what are the forces driving the change?

With these thoughts in mind:

Post a brief statement by Day 4 that expresses your thoughts.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings and prepare a response that includes the following:

  • What type of change efforts are occurring in your organization right now?

2. Assignment – Week 2

Change is an integral part of an organization. Various forces drive changes. All changes, however, are not successful, and there are many reasons for failure in organizational change. Read the assigned readings for the week to get an indepth understanding of these concepts.

In this assignment, you will be assigned a current article by the Instructor. Please review the article, summarize the critical learning points from the article in 2- to 3-paragraphs, and then post your response.
